Uncommon Health Problems That Damage Your Oral HealthWhen it comes to connecting health problems with oral health issues, heart-related conditions often get most of the attention. While it's true that oral health problems have been connected to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, there are some other less common health problems that can also damage your oral health.

Cancer

While we all know someone who has battled cancer, compared to heart disease and other conditions, cancer is less common. Just like heart troubles, cancer can have an impact on your oral health, especially when it comes to cancer treatments.

Chemotherapy drugs often impact salivary production, altering the chemical composition of saliva and the total amount produced. This tends to be temporary, and once chemotherapy ends, salivary flow returns to normal. Radiation treatments, especially to the neck and head, can also cause temporary or permanent damage to the salivary glands.

HIV/AIDS

Some people who are infected with HIV first notice problems with their mouths. HIV weakens the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections. In the mouth, tooth loss and pain may result, and other oral health issues include:

•  Thrush
•  Dry mouth
•  Oral hair leukoplakia
•  Ulcerative periodontitis
•  Canker sores
•  Red band gingivitis
•  Mouth ulcers

Most of these health problems are treatable, and we are here to help.

Sjorgen's Syndrome

Sjorgen's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's moisture-producing glands. This includes the salivary glands, which can pose a major threat to your oral health. The saliva plays an important role in oral health, as it helps to break down food and washes away debris from the teeth and gums. Without proper saliva production, your oral health may be at risk.

Whether you suffer from one of these problems or are completely healthy, regular dental visits are essential for good oral health. Call us today to set up your next appointment.
