You Still Need to Brush and Floss with Dental Implants to Avoid Gum Disease

Dental implants have been seen as a lifesaver where teeth are concerned. In the past, when people began losing teeth, they would inevitably have to have either their upper teeth or their lower teeth removed (or both, in some cases). This means that for those adults, their bone loss in their jaws began from the time their teeth were removed.
Dental implants are revolutionary, in that they look and operate much like real teeth without bone loss happening to your jawbone. However, just because you got dental implants does not mean that you no longer need to brush and floss. Not sure what we're talking about? Keep reading to find out about brushing and flossing with dental implants.
The Wonder of Dental Implants
With dentures, adults would have to have all of their teeth pulled, and then the dentures would be fitted over the teeth. Adults would remove them every night. There was nothing to anchor the teeth into the mouth, which always led to bone loss. In addition, adults complained they were not able to eat all of the foods they liked if they were wearing dentures.
Dental implants have revolutionized the industry. Rather than having all of your remaining teeth removed for dentures, dental implants can be made to fit one tooth, or a series of teeth. Dental implants are anchored to the jaw, and look or function like real teeth. This is a good thing, because it means that you do not lose bone or gum tissue. However, it also means you have to do more to take care of your dental implants.
Just like with your real teeth, you need to brush and floss your implants twice a day. If you don't, it is possible for bacteria to get into spaces between your implants and your gumline, which could cause decay and infection. If that happens, you might have to have additional work done- which no one wants to have happen.
