Guelph Dental Cleanings

One of the most beautiful things you can wear is a happy and healthy smile, but having teeth that are marred by stains or discolorations can make your smile seem less bright and attractive.

Getting a professional dental cleaning cannot only help remove any superficial stains from your teeth but obtaining an attractive smile is not the only goal we are aiming for when we bring you into our office here at Bisson Dentistry for a cleaning. Sure, a professional tooth cleaning can help you have your most radiant smile, but it can also help prevent a variety of dental problems that can occur if you do not get your teeth cleaned regularly at our office.

What is a Professional Dental Cleaning?

Maintaining good oral health is not just about having a pretty smile. Regular cleaning can also help prevent problems like gum disease and tooth decay. When you eat or drink certain things, it can encourage the growth of bacteria on your teeth. These germs can build up on your teeth and along your gumline in a scummy residue called plaque. You can remove these bacteria at home using a good oral hygiene regimen, but over time, the buildup can harden become more difficult to remove. That is where we step in.

Failure to remove plaque from your teeth can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease is a fairly painless condition that is identified by red and swollen gums, bleeding when you brush and floss, bad breath, and blood in your saliva after you brush and floss. Regular cleanings can help combat gum disease and, if we catch it early enough, even reverse it.

Dental Cleaning with the Ultrasonic Scaler

During your dental cleaning, we will first thoroughly examine your teeth and your gums to determine how healthy they are. We will then begin by carefully removing all built up calculus on your teeth and along your gumline. We will use a special tool, known as a scaler, to remove this buildup. We may use a manual or an ultrasonic scaler to remove the calculus.

Once we scale your teeth, we will then go over them with a specially designed gritty toothpaste to polish your teeth. This toothpaste must be used sparingly, as it can wear away at your enamel if you use it too often. We will also floss your teeth during your cleaning. After we clean and floss your teeth, we may advise a fluoride rinse to help remineralize and strengthen your teeth.

If you feel as though this procedure is taking quite a while when you are in our exam chair, that may mean that you had quite a significant amount of buildup that needed to be removed. A small amount of blood may be present, especially if you do have signs of gum disease. Some tooth sensitivity is normal after a professional dental cleaning.
