Invisalign® Treatments in Guelph

Crooked teeth can have a major impact on every aspect of your life. They can impact your smile, your confidence, and your oral health. Crooked teeth can lead to bruxism, a condition in which you grind, and often clench, your teeth. You may experience severe jaw pain, an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease, and uneven wear on the surfaces of the teeth.

It used to be that if you wanted to correct crooked teeth, you needed to undergo treatment with traditional metal braces. At Bisson Dentistry, we offer an alternative. We can correct your crooked teeth using Invisalign.

Traditional Braces

It used to be that your only option for correcting crooked teeth was metal braces. Metal braces have three basic components, the brackets, the bands, and arch wires. The brackets are attached to the surfaces of each tooth using special dental cement. The bands are placed over the very back teeth and are used to anchor the arch wires in place.

The arch wires span across the teeth, attached to each bracket using an elastic O-ring. These wires are responsible for the movement, and stabilization, of your teeth. While highly effective, metal braces do have several drawbacks. One of the biggest drawbacks to traditional braces is that they stand out quite visibly against your natural teeth. For many, particularly older teens and adults, the visibility of braces is worse than having crooked teeth.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign offers an alternative to traditional metal braces. Instead of brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of clear, rigid plastic aligners that are custom created for your mouth and your specific needs. Set in place over your teeth, the aligners practically disappear, making them much less obvious when you smile. Invisalign aligners are also removable, a unique feature that traditional braces cannot offer.

While they are removable, they should be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day for optimal results in the shortest amount of time. They only need to come out to eat and brush your teeth.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign involves the use of several sets of aligners. Depending on your treatment time, you may go through anywhere from 18 to 30 sets. Each set is meant to be worn for two weeks before moving on to the next, and each new set is slightly different from the one before it. The rigid plastic of the aligners is responsible for the movement, and stabilization of your teeth, rather than wires. It puts pressure on your teeth, gently widening the periodontal ligaments to loosen the teeth. The plastic the guides your teeth into proper alignment and holds them steady while the ligaments, and the bone, heal around the teeth.

Your treatment time depends on your specific situation, as well as your needs. On average, it takes between 9 and 15 months, with most patients seeing their desired results in just under a year. There are some patients who require treatment for two years, but these cases are very rare, especially for adults.
